Ceramic Compost Jar with Charcoal bag

A one-gallon, high-fire ceramic compost jar glazed in our evolving wood-ash collection. Because each batch of glaze is made from different tree ash, the surface naturally shifts in tone and texture—every jar carries a slightly different forest fingerprint.

The fitted lid holds a pocket of high-temperature charcoal sewn into a small jute bag with a fine cotton liner. The jute is repurposed from coffee sacks from a local neighborhood roastery. Fired charcoal becomes incredibly porous, creating a vast internal surface area that naturally adsorbs odor molecules as air passes through it. In simple terms: it helps keep your kitchen air fresh.

It may feel like magic, but it’s beautifully simple science.

The charcoal comes from our own glaze-making process, saved and given a second life. Ash, charcoal, clay, coffee sack—each element returns in a new form. A small, functional reminder that transformation is part of the forest’s rhythm… and part of ours too.
